Whether you’re a hardcore gamer, a big money gambler or just like to kill some time every now and again, there are thousands of mobile games to choose from and the variety is endless nowadays. Apps where you can draw, quizzes, shoot outs, rat races, bug squishing, casinos, slots, bingo. There really is something for everyone and because the gaming industry is growing so rapidly, competition has become fierce, and mobile gaming providers are busting their guts off to make sure that their games are the slickest around!
So we’ve established that when it comes to Smartphones and modern devices, we’re no longer short of great gameplay experiences. But there’s a few simple things that YOU can do to make the mobile gaming experience even better on your iPhone, iPad and Android. So stick around to hear my top tips on how to maximise your mobile gaming experience.
Look after your Battery
If you’re like me, when you first purchased your shiny, new smartphone you we’re super excited and far too cocky to read the instructions. You probably thought, “I’m not stupid! I can figure everything out for myself”. Until suddenly, you noticed your battery running out waaaaay too quick. You’re about to throw your iPhone out of the window when suddenly, your mate (probably an iPhone geek) kindly informs you that you haven’t closed any of your apps. They’re all running in the background, wasting energy………. dimwit! So, remember when your playing games on your mobile, double-click that little home button and CLOSE YOUR APPS IF YOU’RE NOT USING THEM! It took me a good 10 minutes to close down all 50 apps that had been open (and many unused) for weeks, without me noticing. But then again, I’m blonde, so that’s my excuse.
Another way to prolong your battery life and enjoy mobile games for longer is to adjust the brightness of your screen to a more suitable, less energy-consuming level. You’ll find this option somewhere in your mobile settings. So what have we learnt? In order to maximise gaming from our mobile focus on one game at a time, close all other functions and apps that don’t need to be open, and have a play around with your mobile settings to see how you can prolong battery power.
Wi-Fi vs 3G
Always remember to turn off your 3G connectivity, when you don’t need it! Wherever you can, use Wi-Fi. It’s another good way to save mobile battery, it’s cheaper because you won’t use up all your data allowance, and Wi-Fi is just generally more reliable for playing games on your mobile. 3G is good, but can be a bit temperamental depending on where you are, what network you’re on and how much data allowance you have. Problems with 3G connectivity can disrupt your gaming experiences massively! Imagine being in the middle of a game of roulette and losing connectivity just as you were on a winning streak, or narrowly missing out on reaching the final level of angry birds, because your mobile kept stopping and starting, and screwed up your last shot. Frustrating or what!? Obviously if you don’t have access to Wi-Fi and you’re eager to play, then 3G is the way to go! But wherever you can, it’s better to play mobile games using Wi-Fi.
Gadgets, Gadgets, Gadgets!
For some games, mobile gadgets might be seen as a waste of time, but for others they may just be a life saver! I’ve seen some mega cool mobile gaming gadgets hit the market over the past few months and some are proving very handy for gamers, particularly on devices like the iPhone and iPad. For some games, your big, clumsy fingers may not be precise enough for touchscreen actions, and the grip of your fingertips is just not good enough to control the quick, nifty movements. Hence the introduction of gamepads and gadgets like the iCade, Fling Joystick, iCrayon, AppGun and AppWheel! To name a few!
The right controls can not only improve the mobile gaming experience, but they can also make you a better player, simply by allowing you a better feel for navigation, accuracy and control. Of course gadgets aren’t right for all mobile games, probably just the fast paced, motion-packed ones with lots of things flying out at you from the screen! But who knows, there’s a gadget for everything these days!
Time to get Social
Game centres and online communities are making mobile gaming much more fun, social and competitive nowadays. Mobile apps like Draw Something and Words With Friends allow you to play against other people, and even use social networking profiles to interact by signing up through Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts. These games have taken off massively because they get everybody talking, and ‘word’of mouth’ can spread FAST! Just look at the Draw Something App, within 50 days 50 million people had downloaded it to play against their friends. With social gaming you can even make new friends online, you can post your top tips and high scores, and compete against friends (and slate them when they’re losing!) through interactive live chat functions. Social gaming communities have become extremely popular because people like to play against others, exchange tips and ideas, brag about their winnings, hear about promotions and just generally have a bit of online banter! IT’S FUN! So give it a try.
If you haven’t tried it already, you’re definitely missing out. Now’s the time to get social in mobile gaming. You can follow Pocket Fruity on Twitter and Facebook to chat to players about games, tell us about your big wins, share funny photos and take part in exclusive competitions too!
